Health Side Effects of Drinking SodaWe’ve researched the research and segregated the real research from the fictional and guess what? There’s enough research material to indicate that all the bad publicity soda (including diet soda) has been receiving in recent times is justified. So Let us look at the 5 direct and indirect health effects of soda.

# 1 Dramatic Fat buildup, Cholesterol and Triglyceride Blood Fats

Latest research done inDenmarkindicates that drinking soda (regular or diet) leads to dramatic fat buildup around your skeletal muscles and your liver. Worse, this is a kind of ‘sticky’ fat that your body holds on to and does not release until all other fat is gone. People who drank a glass of soda every day had a 132 percent increase in liver fat and almost 200 percent increase in skeletal fat within a six month period. There was also a 30% jump in triglyceride blood fats, organ fat and an 11 percent increase in cholesterol. Adverse health effects of drinking soda include a direct correlation between soda and diabetes.

# 2 The Soda Belly

Research conducted at the University of Texas Health Science Center over a 10 year period into the health effects of diet soda, indicates that those who drank diet soda almost doubled their waist circumference. Since the diet was carefully controlled and monitored, researchers could successfully establish a correlation between diet soda consumption and increase in belly fat. Worse, consuming more than one glass a day saw an astonishing five-fold percent waist expansion! A separate study indicates that aspartame; one of the key ingredients in regular and diet soda raised blood glucose levels, and caused the weight gain. Clearly, adverse health effects of soda go far beyond just fat buildup.

# 3 Colors used in Soda are carcinogenic

Just last year, the Center for Science in the Public Interest petitioned the FDA to ban 2-methylimidazole and 4-methylimidazole – the artificial coloring agents used in the making of brown colored sodas. Their research indicated that both were extremely carcinogenic. Just 16 micrograms per day of 4-methylimidazole is enough to pose a cancer threat. Popular colas pack (including diet colas) pack as much as 200 micrograms per 20-ounce bottle. Soda effects on health it seems, is anything but good. Quit soda – add some anti-cancer foods to your diet instead.

# 4 Phosphates accelerate the Aging Process

A study, published in the FASEB Journal (2010 issue) indicates that phosphates, or phosphoric acid in sodas lead to accelerated aging besides kidney, heart, muscle loss and osteoporosis. This aging process accelerates within i.e. our cell tissues and organs age and fail faster than normal. Side effects of soda should include early death – and an ugly one at that!

# 5 Poisoned Water Supply

In 2009, while testing water samples from waste water treatment plants for non-conventional chemicals, Swiss scientists were surprised to find Acesulfame K, Saccharin and Sucralose – all key sweetening ingredients of diet sodas. Treated water is released into lakes and rivers. Unfortunately Acesulfame K and Sucralose were not and are still not being filtered out before water is being released into the lakes and rivers. So whichever brand of regular or diet soda you preferred, it’s best put into the past. The health effects of drinking regular or diet soda are far too damning to be ignored.
